Tommorow's Great New Insight…
This blog is predicated on the assumption that the world doesn’t need to
know the moment-by-moment details of anyone’s life, including mine. That
said, there are a lot of thoughtful people out there offering us the kind
of reflections that can stir our minds, our hearts and our lives, and aim
us more “God-ward” than we were just the moment before. If this blog can
touch on that, it might be worthwhile.
Joan Chittister, commenting in the prologue of “Called to Question” on
how writing is an audacious act because of the vulnerability it creates
for the writer, offers a two sided evaluation. On the negative side,
writing opens the writer to public criticism, ridicule and rejection. On
the positive side, it stirs minds, touches hearts, and brings us into
contact with our souls. In light of this, she asks, “So how can
[writing] be a waste of time, an idle act, a mistake, a betrayal of truth?
Who can possible tell us not to do it?”
“But they do. Institutions silence and suppress thought regularly.
Governments jail dissenters. Churches excommunicate them. Corporations
fire them. Communities shun them. But tomorrow’s great new insight is
always yesterdays foolish idea…Ideas are the coin of the spiritual
realm. They are the price of admission to the spiritual life. They lead
us beyond ourselves to the Great Idea that makes all of life worthwhile.”
If tomorrow’s great insight is always yesterdays foolish idea, then the
church I serve might be charging up the on-ramp to greatness even as I
write this. God help us…this could be an amazing ride!
Peace,
Tim
