I had a conversation recently with a well known Canadian painter and film maker about the power of words of blessing in our lives. We were talking about identity – what it takes to sort our who you are, to hold onto that while also making space for the “other”, how this all plays into the creative process…all kinds of good “arty” stuff like that. In the course of that conversation, I told him the story of a situation in which my father had, without even really being deliberate about it, had affirmed my ability to tell stories, and what an impact that has had in my life over the years. This man looked at me with this remarkable, unforgettable expression of sadness and longing in his eyes, and said, “You father blessed you…I never had that”. It was, for both of us in different ways, a heart-wrenching moment.
This Sunday (and don’t forget, this week it will be Sunday EVENING! – 7:00 p.m.), I want to follow that up with some consideration of one of Paul’s prayers of both longing and blessing over a community he loves. My hope is that it will be a fitting way to assist us in facing a New Year, and offering us both some encouragement and equipping for both the joys and the challenges that year may hold.
Peace to you all. I’ll see you in the New Year.
