This week at The Table…

February 10, 2014

At breakfast yesterday morning Tayah suddenly said, “Did you know that a pigs heart is almost like a human heart?”. Now there’s a picture to carry into the day…

As it turned out, there was a context for that info. The day before, Tayah, Tirian and Corinne had been helping out at a transitional school for newcomers to Canada. One of those kids was a young adolescent girl named Valentine. She dreams of being a doctor, and couldn’t have been happier than to have a pigs heart to cut into.

Davis, who was also busy in the kitchen, said “I think it would be quite fitting for a heart surgeon’s name to be Valentine”.

An oblique reference, to be sure, and I think it may have flown right past Tayah. But in light of the soon coming celebration of Valentine’s Day, it is an interesting one. St. Valentine, after whom our cultures day celebrating romance is named, is legendary for marrying people in defiance of the Roman emperor’s decree against marriage. As the story goes, he persisted in this practice even though he was eventually beaten, stoned and decapitated for it.

In light of the legend of St. Valentine, it may be worth dialoguing about the possibility that we have the essence of Valentine’s Day inside out and backwards. And, together with my guest Sherryl Koop, that is what we are going to do this Sunday morning.

We will meet at 10:30 a.m. at 493 Notre Dame.

Other Matters:
-a reminder to mark your calendar for our next Souper Sunday on February 23rd, and to let us know what you will be bringing
-also, the Plett house will be hosting a “skating party and potluck” on March 8th.  Start time will be 4:00 p.m., potluck supper, and then more ice time or hang time. This will be a very kid-friendly event (no age limit at either end on the definition of “kid”). More info to follow re: RSVP and coordinating the potluck.
