There’s a well-worn maxim that says that a camel is a horse built by committee. The idea is that too many voices can turn a good idea into something that, while functional, looks a little odd.
This sort of thinking usually gets bandied about whenever someone wants to extol the idea of the individual genius. The reality, however, is that there are very few certifiable individual geniuses. Whether we look in the arts, business or politics, most success comes from a great deal of group effort; and that includes the development and growth of this thing we call the Church.
This Sunday we’re going to spend some time figuring out how design by committee connects to the Tower of Babel, Papal infallibility, the Canadian Multiculturalism Act and Benjamin Britten’s “Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Purcell.”
If you’re intrigued by this idea come down to The Table Sunday morning at 10:30 (we’re still at the Frame for a few more weeks), bring an inquisitive mind and a mug for some coffee.
