This week at the store…
I don’t remember the sequence of events, but I do remember the circumstances. Almost exactly one year ago, just after we had our house fire, I was lying in a bed that wasn’t our own, in a house that wasn’t our own, in what felt like a life that wasn’t my own, and I was reading. The book was Anne Lamott’s little gem, “Help, Thanks, Wow”.
It’s a book on prayer. I don’t think I’m much good at prayer, so any help I can get is welcome. And it is a thin book, which I thought would be helpful. Also, the events of the previous few days suggested that prayer might be appropriate, so I dug in.
And I loved it. There are a few things from those early days after that fire that still seem to glow in my memory (in a good way). This book is one of them, and as I’ve been revisiting it at the start of this New Year I have wanted to share some of Ms. Lamott’s insights with all of you.
So this Sunday we begin a three week consideration of what Anne Lamott calls “the three essential prayers”; Help, Thanks, and Wow.
We will meet at 493 Notre Dame (the second floor of Independent Jewellers) at 10:30 a.m. There will be hot coffee and tea, there is a bus stop right outside the front door and /or a place to park your car, your bike, and your self, and a community of like-minded deviants that are well worth getting to know.
I look forward to our time together.
Peace,
Tim Plett
