Invaded by aliens…
You may or may not be aware that for a short period (some 45 minutes or so) way back in the late 1930s our planet was invaded by aliens from the planet Mars. These visitors arrived quickly and left even quicker, about as quick as a pause for station identification.
Now, whether you believe this tale or not has a great deal to do with how you perceive the narrative of reality. For many of the people of 1938, the ones who had not been privy to the full story, nothing could seem more real than the sound of New York being burnt to a crisp by an alien heat ray. For the others who had tuned in early, the whole charade was nothing more than a thrilling radio program. We’re going to spend some time this Sunday digging into the way in which perception shapes our understanding of the reality our lives, our world and our relationships with each other and with God.I look forward to seeing you all this Sunday morning in Gallery C, which we used over the summer!
I will also be leading an evening worship gathering on the last Sunday night of most months between now and May. The event is called “Sanctus”, and will take place at Elim Chapel. (In case you are wondering, none of this is directly related to their pastoral search, except to the degree that I thought it might be a good time in their congregational life to offer such an event in their context.) Everyone is welcome; Elim is hosting, but my vision for the event is that it would be a welcoming occasion for anyone seeking to set aside an hour of their life to be consciously in the presence of the Holy.
